Poker: Skill or Luck?

By Joe Kohlhaas

Recently I found myself caught up in the age-old debate; Is poker a game of luck or a game of skill? Most people would agree it is both. However, my debate started when an acquaintance who has never played poker once in his life declared that buying into a $10,000 poker tournament was no different than buying $10,000 worth of lottery tickets. In other words, it is 100% luck.

This is obviously not true. If poker were only luck, how could you explain certain players winning much more than chance would allow? Just by allowing folding, the element of skill is added. If I do nothing more than fold poor starting hands, I should be able to slightly improve my winning percentage. Add to that the ability to influence others decisions through different betting strategies and poker is clearly a game of skill to some extent. But it begs the question; what percentage of poker is skill?

The problem with this is that it depends. If you are talking about a single poker hand, luck is much more of a factor than when you are talking about an entire session or many sessions as a total. In a single hand you have to be lucky enough to be dealt a good starting hand and be lucky enough that some else wasn’t dealt a better one. If you are dealt KK you wouldn’t consider it lucky if the player to your left was dealt AA on the same hand. However, you could still “get lucky” and hit a king on the flop. Even in a single hand, skill is a factor. One can outplay an opponent. It also takes skill to get the most value out of a winning hand and to know when to get away from a losing hand. But, over longer sessions is where skill really shows through.

In a casino there are many different games played. Poker is played in most casinos now, but it is unique when compared to other casino games. In every other casino game you are playing against the house. In poker you are playing against the other players. No one ever claims the casinos are “lucky” to win so much money. Luck has nothing to do with it. Every game in a casino, from slots to roulette, is set up so the house has a slight statistical advantage. If the house wins only 51% of the time, they are making money. Over many wagers it is a guarantee that the casino will win more than they will lose.

So it is in poker. A skilled poker player need only win more than he loses. No poker player wins every hand, but many win more than they lose. The more skilled the player, the wider the gap will be between amount won and amount lost. Over thousands of hands, luck is not part of the equation; the same way a casino takes luck out of the equation. It may not be possible to measure exactly what percentage of poker is skill in general. However, over many hands, it is possible to measure the percentage of wins due to players skill as compared to the skill of his opponent. If there was no skill involved the win percentage would move closer and closer to 50% the more hands that are played. Anything over (or under) 50% would then be attributable to skill (or lack of skill). For the well skilled player, poker may not even be considered gambling.

Betting Online – Help

By Victor Tanner

There are more resources available to the average person than there ever has been in the past. Before the Internet, people had to read newspapers and magazines to keep track of sports teams, players and coaches. Now, with a click of a button, you can stay up to date on how every player, coach and team is doing, no matter where they play.

This information is very helpful when placing sports bets. There is no sense in placing bets without utilizing the power of the Internet. You can look at injury reports, check how players and teams have been playing recently and even look up which team the analysts are siding with. This is valuable information and can help anyone win a greater percentage of their sports bets.

To win bets consistently, it is important to avoid the biggest sports betting mistake people make, betting subjectively. This is most common when people bet for their favorite team to win. This is often a mistake because people are biased towards their favorite team. This bias does not allow them to bet objectively, which hinders their ability to win bets consistently.

Betting on your favorite team can be a great way to win bets and make money. After all, you know this team as well as anyone and you should have a good idea how they will fare in certain games. The problem arises when people think their team might lose and they still bet for them to win. It is kind of like they are rooting extra hard for their team by placing a bet for them to win, even though they know in their heart they will probably lose that day. This is a great way to throw money away and not capitalize on the knowledge you possess.

To further aid his betting, Victor uses the Sports Betting Champ betting system. It helps people win 97% of their bets. I have won 54 of 56 bets using the system in less than a year of betting. Everyday you are not using this system, you are losing money. Learn more about the Sports Betting Champ [http://www.squidoo.com/WinningSportsBets]!

Can you really trust them, or is Betting Against All Odds just another overhyped and useless soccer betting system?

What Makes a “Good Poker Player?”

By Adel Awwad

The game of poker is arguably the most popular aspect of modern gambling. The intricate skill level and variety of hands and strategies entice even the most seasoned players to get involved in the game of poker.

There are many considerations as to what makes a good poker player, but the core concepts in the gambling realm are similar. The things that make a good poker player are usually the things that will assist you in the world of gambling as a whole.

The first thing that makes a poker player good is probably the most agreed upon consensus with those involved in gambling worldwide: quick and accurate decision making skills. A good poker player will be able to think quickly and apply the decisions they make at the proper time to succeed in the game of poker. Almost comparable to a quarterback on a football team who must possess good decision making skills, a good poker player is put in a similar situation when gambling. They have to think on their feet and quickly. This is the single more important aspect of succeeding at gambling and becoming a good poker players.

Another aspect of a good poker player is the ability to change gears at a moments notice. Poker, like gambling as a whole, is always changing and when playing a poker game, things can change quickly and the ability to adapt with those changes is what makes a poker player good.

Yet, another consideration of gambling, especially in particular poker, is knowing the game – really, really knowing the game. A good poker player or gambling enthusiast in general, will know all of the ins and outs of the game. They will know poker history, popular poker players, online poker rooms, different hands, strategies and more. A good poker player will study the game of poker like a craft and cultivate it accordingly. The good poker players are the people who have a genuine love of the game and have an acute desire to continue to learn developing trends in poker and in gambling as a whole.

Finally, a good poker player will posses the most amount of confidence a human being can have. Gambling requires not only brains, but confidence and poker is no exception. Some of the world’s best poker players win because they are confident in their decisions and don’t second guess themselves. Confidence will make a good poker player as surely as any of the other traits mentioned above – but the combination of all of the skills makes a good poker player and a great student of gambling as well.

Poker – Quick Rules

By Adel Awwad

The first time I was asked to play poker, I had to confess I didn’t have a clue about it. Then after my poker-savvy friend who extended the invitation explained the rules to me, I thought, “Ah-ha! I now know that I will never, ever learn to play poker, and all of my friends just want me to lose my money.” However, I eventually discovered that poker is not impossible to learn, and furthermore, online poker and Internet casinos are fun!

Wondering what the rules are? Fortunately, Internet casinos have the same rules for online poker as you would play around your kitchen table. The two most popular poker games are Seven-Card Stud and Texas Hold ‘Em. In both varieties you choose the five cards that represent your hand, and the highest ranking hand wins. Sounds simple, right? Well, before you head off to those Internet casinos, let’s discuss the ranks.

Basically, there are ten possible hands. Here they are from highest to lowest:

1. Royal Flush: Five cards of the same suit in order from ten to ace (10, J, Q, K, A). If you have a royal flush, bet the House!

2. Straight Flush: Five cards of the same suit in order, but not necessarily the highest. A straight flush can be 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6; as long as it’s five in a row.

3. Four of a Kind: Four of the same value cards in any suit (four sevens, four queens, etc).

4. Full House: Three of one value card and two of another, any suit.

5. Flush: Five cards of the same suit, order doesn’t matter.

6. Straight: Five cards in ranking order, regardless of suit.

7. Three of a Kind: Three matching value cards, any suit (three fives, three aces).

8. Two Pair: Just like it sounds: two of one card, two of another, any suit.

9. Pair: Two matching cards.

10. High Card: If no one else in the game has any of the above combinations, the person with the highest card in their hand (Ace being the best) wins.

In Seven-Card Stud online poker, each player is dealt seven cards and chooses the best five to make their betting hand. With Texas Hold ‘Em, the Internet casino holds two cards in the “center” of the game, which each player can use in conjunction with their five dealt cards to make the best possible five-card combination. It can be a lot of fun to construct your poker hand once you learn the ranking order–and like me, you will find out that poker isn’t as hard as you think! Here’s a hint: keep a printed list of the rank of hands beside you while you visit the Internet casino. Nobody else can see you using it!

Poker – How To Build A Bankroll

By Napoleon Will

Building a bankroll playing poker is one of the most important steps towards becoming a serious poker player. Before you even decide to play poker, put aside some money that you can afford to lose. I would recommend searching for online poker bonuses and depositing a small amount. Look for online poker rooms that offer a deposit bonus simply for signing up. After you have your account name selected and money deposited, it’s time to start playing poker. The natural tendency is to play the highest limits possible because you can win more. If you are serious about building a bankroll, you should start at the lowest limit possible. Play in some single table tournaments called Sit And Goes. In these one-table tournaments, you pay a small buy-in and get tournament chips. Usually, the top two or three players get a cash prize. By playing these small buy-in tournaments, you will learn a lot about poker at a very low cost.

Always play at a level where you can afford to lose the money. Slowly and surely you will get better at poker. As you get better, you will win more money and your bankroll will start to grow. Move up to the next poker limit when you are comfortable with the amount of money in play. If you find that the money is affecting your decisions, you are playing at too high of a limit. Move back to the lower limit where you are comfortable and continue to build your bankroll. Focus on your skill level rather than the size of your bankroll. Fight the urge to play at limits that are too large for your bankroll. Most players are playing at a limit that is too high for their bankroll. Usually, these players are the ones who eventually lose and start back at square one. Bankroll building requires patience, persistence, and an ambition to improve your skill.

Gambling, Drug Addiction and Alcoholism – Path to Hell

By Chy King

Any betting or wagering for self or others whether for money or not and where the outcome is uncertain or depends on chance or probability constitutes gambling. Gambling comes in many forms. Most of them are for money.

Compulsive Gambling and Addiction

There is something called as compulsive gambling. It starts at the age of 20’s for most men and at the late 30’s for women as an entertaining, stress relieving and fun activity which eventually progresses to become a habitual gambling. However most people progressively become addict gamblers usually after a big win. After this the desire to win back all the money intensifies more rapidly. It is a disorder which causes inconvenience to both the gambler and his/her family. There is no cure for habitual gambling. Despite disruptions in family and professional life, the gambling goes on.

Compulsive gambling has three phases which include ecstasy when winning, severe tension and depression when losing and extreme anxiety in between these two phases. Being a gambling addict not only causes trouble to the individual but also to the people around the individual. As the time passes, lying becomes a characteristic feature of the gambler and the family persons learns not to trust the individual. Then the relationship between the family and children becomes hatred and they eventually break up. The psychological agony and social turbulence can result in marital breakdown, financial ruin and irreparable personal life profile. Gambling is always associated with physical symptoms like anxiety, headaches, and depression leading to smoking and alcohol consumption.

As it progresses, the individual losses the job and the savings might be lost which may induce the individual to venture in criminal activities like stealing money from colleagues to obtain more funds for gambling. They also borrow large amount of money which is usually never be paid. They tend to ignore rents and other family expenses also.

Heavy gambling is done because of the easy access and availability of casinos. Individuals from the middle class family are more prone to gambling because of the unemployment.

Marijuana

What Is Marijuana?

Marijuana is a type of drug. It is a mixture of various parts (leaves, stems, seeds and flowers) of a plant called the hemp plant. The scientific name of hemp plant is Cannabis sativa. Marijuana has about 400 different types of chemical in it and some of them can cause cancer, but the main and active ingredient is called as tetrahydrocannabinol which is better known as THC. Ganja, chronic, pot, grass, boom and reefer are some of the common names but there are about 200 different names which refer to marijuana.

How and for what marijuana is used?

Marijuana is used in different ways. Some of users mix it with food, some brew it as tea but most of them smoke. Marijuana has tetrahydrocannabinol or THC which affects the brain and triggers it to release dopamine which gives high pleasure to the user for a short time.

Do you know the meaning of drug injection?

In olden days people prefer to take tobacco, alcohol, heroine etc., as a drug to nourish them. But nowadays it is casual to nourish them by using certain drug injections which is an instant process and also more effective. Though there are lots of alternatives it seems to be the time saving approach.

Alcoholism

What do you mean by the term alcoholism?

Alcoholism is the term reveals the meaning of simultaneous consumption of certain alcohol beverages. People are saying many reasons for the intake of this slow poison, despite of the health problems and negative social sequences made by it. Some people say that the sudden stop of certain alcoholic beverages will lead to a great problem in health. They argue that it will induce them to make a suicide attempt so it is always advisable to stop it.

What are the modern diagnoses taken against drug addiction?

Nowadays there are many modern diagnoses taken against the drug addiction through using modern technologies. It is possible to diagnose a person by knowing the intake of that particular drug. The recovery of the person depends on him. He should refuse to accept the intake of those drugs by himself.

In European countries they are struggling to bring down the people who were affected by drug addiction, but it is quite difficult there. On other hand in USA they have achieved.

What are the effects of marijuana and other drugs?

When the drug enters the brain, the THC present in it locates the neurons with specific receptors called cannabinoid receptors and binds to them. Then it influences the normal communication between the brain cells and causes lack of coordination. It is usually caused by smoking. High usage of the drug can cause anxiety and often panic attacks.

High concentrations of cannabinoid receptors are found in cerebellum, cerebral cortex and hippocampus. Centers of these parts of the brain are responsible for memory and certain types of learning. So when the THC binds to these parts it causes studying and memory problems like recalling the recent events becoming difficult. Cerebellum is associated with coordination. And another part of the brain called basal ganglia is also affected by THC. The basal ganglia control the movement of our body and hence our reflection becomes slow. So it is unwise to drive vehicles when marijuana is used or it may lead to accident.

Smoking Marijuana increases the chance of heart attacks. It may also lead to lung cancer even quickly than normal cigarette smoking because the Marijuana smoker tends to inhale more deeply and hold his breath longer than a cigarette smoker does.

What are the alternative therapies given for drug addiction?

Some of the medical experts say that acupuncture is one of the good alternative therapies for such addiction. Though there is some information about some alternative therapy, you can inquire to know which one is suitable to you.

What do you know about self medication?

Self medication termed as the treatment which is made for us and made by us without any medical supervision. If a buyer diagnoses himself using specific drug then it is fair to mention it as self medication.

It is not advisable to undertake self medication because you may use the drug on wrong ratio which leads to any other problems. So we should make sure about the nature and use of that drug.

Though many articles say about these drug addictions and its rehabilitation, it is not advisable to take certain drugs which leads to fatal results. It is better to conclude this essay by saying “prevention is better than cure”.

What is the cure?

Once addicted, it will be very difficult to come out. The user must have pure determination to get rid of these drugs.

Does Marijuana have medical values?

Marijuana has medical values. THC, the main and active ingredient can produce effects which can be potentially used for treating variety of medical conditions. It is also used in pills for stimulating appetite in AIDS patients. Scientific research is still going on about the medical values and the effects of the other chemicals present in marijuana.

Gambling – Dangerous Or Fun?

By Carol Stanley

Gambling is a most interesting sport, amusement, vocation or wherever it fits in your vocabulary. People either love it or hate it. As boomers are aging and have more free time…many are learning poker and enjoying casino gaming. The question is gambling dangerous or fun?

It is said that during a downturn economy more people head to the casinos. It is not that they have a ton of money. There is hope at the casinos. Even though the chances of winning big dollars are quite slim, people are willing to allocate a certain amount of their discretionary income to this continuing popular activity. The question here are more boomers gambling, as they see their money evaporating in the stock market? Are they trying to make up their losses? All of us out there any age always have the hopes of hitting it big whether in a casino or by purchasing a lottery ticket.

Playing poker is a great way to spend an afternoon. I do speak from experience. However, I take a certain amount of dollars with me, and when they are gone I go home. I am now on a poker budget of $200.00 per month…I am hoping my winning ratio will improve so I can play more often. The rest of my free time is spent working on the computer to market my book. I am extremely health conscious so I do spend a lot of time cooking healthy foods. I also spend a lot of time reading about vitamins and supplements, and feel this adds a lot to our healthy lifestyle.

Gambling can be a lot of fun for people who are careful not to let it become an addiction. I feel that I have a mild addiction because I take only the money I can afford to lose to the casino. Sitting at the poker table chatting with the guys (and a few gals) is really fun. We laugh, make jokes and enjoy the game. Other people must feel the same as I do, because there are lots of people visiting the casinos and enjoying poker. People who hate gambling are extremely vocal about it. Everyone has the right to their opinion. Also for single baby boomers this is a great place to meet new people…For women only here, there are lots of nice looking, successful men playing poker.

One thing in favor of poker for the aging boomer population is that it is great for the mind. You are constantly thinking, figuring and working on your odds. So before you knock it..why not try it? So if you control your spending you do not have to ask the question is gambling dangerous or fun?

Gambling – Is it Illegal Or Legal?

By John Parks

Legislation in the United States has, for the most part, considered online gambling somewhat of a legal grey area. An important thing to remember is that there is no law that states online gambling should be considered illegal.

For the most part, the legality of online gambling depends on your residential state. Louisiana, Illinois, Michigan and Nevada currently prohibit online gambling. Massachusetts, California, Utah, and South Dakota prohibit specific areas of online gambling while not prohibiting others.

However, substantial loopholes seem to surface from those laws. The notion was held that no law could ever be introduced on a national level that could or would prevent online gambling from taking place. Yet, in 2006, that notion proved to not be entirely accurate.

In September of 2006, a bill was represented by a republican congressman citing moral issues with online gambling. This law was called the Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006. The Senate eventually passed the bill successfully. As a consequence of the Act it is deemed illegal for any financial institutions located within America to accept any online gambling transactions generated from any gambling operator.

However, the new law makes the legality still hard to determine. A few predominant online casinos continue to receive players from America. The new laws have proven rather difficult and nearly impossible to enforce.

For the time being, it seems that the placing of bets online by American citizens has merely been changed, and not disregarded entirely. Although no one involves has even come close to being prosecuted under this relatively new law, Players should still educate themselves beforehand and be willing to take a little risk.
